Handmade in Italy: meaning, value and 1M certification

A handmade in Italy product is an object in which the artisan’s manual contribution constitutes the relevant part of the craftsmanship, rooted in a territory and its traditions. Choosing handmade means rewarding quality, uniqueness and history: not a simple purchase, but a small investment in authenticity and culture.

In this guide you will discover what "handmade" truly means, why it is worth choosing it, why it is a sustainable choice and how to recognise it, also thanks to certifications such as the 1M brand.

What "handmade" means: meaning and definition

"Handmade" refers to a product whose creation depends predominantly on the manual skill of the maker. It does not necessarily mean that every single stage is carried out without tools: what matters is that the manual contribution constitutes an important component of the finished product.

This idea is today also reinforced at the regulatory level. Regulation (EU) 2023/2411, which came into force on 16 November 2023, introduced for the first time a uniform protection at European level for geographical indications of craft and industrial products. According to the Regulation, goods made entirely by hand or with the aid of manual, digital or mechanical tools are eligible for protection, provided that the manual contribution remains significant and the product meets three requirements:

  • being rooted in a specific territory
  • possessing a quality or reputation linked to that origin
  • having at least one production phase carried out in that area

In Italy, moreover, registration in the Register of Craft Enterprises (Law 443/1985) remains the reference for official recognition as a craft enterprise.

Why choose handmade products

Choosing a handmade product means rewarding excellence. The most evolved markets, CNA president Dario Costantini has observed, demand quality, uniqueness and personalisation: products "that have a soul", that last over time and express history and identity.

Behind this growing demand are concrete benefits for buyers:

  • Quality and durability: craft productions are by definition attentive to quality and designed to last over time, in contrast to the rapid obsolescence of mass-produced goods.
  • Uniqueness and unrepeatable character: each piece encapsulates techniques and knowledge handed down from generation to generation. Every object carries a story and an emotion, making each purchase a personal and inimitable experience.
  • Personalisation: the artisanal dimension allows bespoke solutions that are impossible in mass production.
  • History, heritage and identity: when you choose an authentic product you are not merely buying a material good, but a fragment of cultural heritage. True authenticity is born from the deep bond between the artisan, their work and the tradition they represent.

Buying a handmade product is also a gesture towards people and places: supporting artisans means keeping local "know-how" alive, giving continuity to workshops and helping to preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

For this reason, the relationship between price and value must be read differently. The higher price of a handcrafted item is justified by the high added value of design, tradition and manual craftsmanship: not a simple expense, but an investment in quality, authenticity and culture.

The sustainability of craftsmanship

Handmade is also a sustainable choice. Craft productions, naturally attentive to quality and durability, stand in opposition to the throwaway logic: a well-made object lasts over time and needs replacing less often. To this is added the value of short supply chains and local craftsmanship, which ensure greater traceability of materials.

The sustainability of craftsmanship translates into concrete practices integrated into the creative process:

  • waste reduction and material recovery: a traditional example is the "pajarole" of Acquaviva Picena, baskets made entirely by hand by the women of the village using the waste from agricultural processing;
  • use of natural dyes and organic fibres;
  • working with recycled materials.

There is finally a social sustainability, often less visible but equally important. The bond with the territory fosters the enhancement of local skills, the transmission of knowledge from master to apprentice and the resilience of communities: every workshop that remains open is a custodian of culture and life for its territory.

Craftsmanship in the Marche

The Marche region is a land of ancient crafts, the fruit of a heritage handed down from generation to generation and still today a source of income and tourist attraction. From many local workshops, internationally renowned companies of excellence have been born.

Traditional crafts are linked to specific areas of the region:

  • Leather goods and footwear: the Fermo-Macerata district is among the most important in Italy; Tolentino is home to the finest leather fashion accessories;
  • Paper and watermarks: historically linked to Fabriano, where the watermark technique for banknotes and security papers was invented;
  • Ceramics and majolica: flourishing during the Renaissance in Pesaro and Urbino, renowned for the "rosa pesarese" technique;
  • Bobbin lace: a fifteenth-century art preserved by the women of Offida;
  • Straw weaving: the Montappone district produces 85% of Italy’s national hat output;
  • Musical instruments: Castelfidardo is the world capital of the accordion, Recanati of guitars.

The 1M brand: a guarantee of authenticity

In a market full of imitations, certifications help to recognise the truly handmade. The 1M – Marche Eccellenza Artigiana brand is the official certification of the Marche Region that attests to the quality of the artistic, typical and traditional productions of the territory. It can only be used by craft enterprises registered in the relevant register that operate in compliance with a regional production specification: for the customer, it is a concrete guarantee of quality and authenticity.

How to recognise and support truly handmade products

Recognising and supporting authentic craftsmanship is within the reach of every consumer. The most effective actions are simple:

  • conscious purchasing, choosing products that last over time and come from short supply chains;
  • choosing certified products, recognisable by the 1M brand or, in future, by the EU Protected Geographical Indication, as a guarantee of authenticity;
  • supporting workshops, both through experiential tourism — meeting the masters at work — and through digital channels.
